We have often seen many actors go an extra mile to portray their role and to completely delve into their character. Joining this league is Shivani Tomar who plays the role of Kanchan in &TV’s Mitegi Lakshman Rekha. Inspired by her character and driven by her desire, Shivani has taken up self-defence classes for the show.

Commenting upon the importance of self-defence for women, she said “I strongly believe that women should take responsibility for their own safety and learn self-defence. I believe it’s extremely vital and more of a necessity now, rather than a desire. As women, we are often told to remain alert of our surroundings or to avoid late nights because it’s considered unsafe. We are constantly tormented with the worry of travelling late or walking in dark and dingy areas. All these worries can be avoided if women know how to physically protect and defend themselves. Learning how to fight and being able to pin a man down gives a woman another level of confidence and helps them come out stronger. I think if we all had that level of confidence, we might finally be able to change the society’s stereotypical way of thinking.”

Mitegi Lakshman Rekha highlights the journey of Kanchan and Vishesh who have a similar outlook towards life and are not tied up the societal norms. Through the eyes of these characters, the show brings to light the different Lakshman Rekhas drawn up by the society which hamper the growth of women in this country. Talking in depth about the show and her character Shivani said “The show highlights Kanchan’s journey for whom the societal norms didn’t exist but at the same time is fighting her inner dilemmas. It’s a story about breaking barriers, raising questions on all the boundaries and shackles that restrict women from living life on their own terms. Kanchan is a very well sketched character that will create a lot of intrigue amongst the viewers.”

Shivani is surely leaving no stone unturned to portray her role with absolute perfection.
