Lucknow lad Vinit Singh has made a name for himself in the music industry. Vinit, who shot to fame in the music talent show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge in 2005, was in his hometown recently to perform at a special event.

Since you were in your hometown to perform, did you get a chance to catch up with your family and close friends?
Yes, I did. Since I live in Mumbai, I don’t get a chance to meet my family and friends in Lucknow that often. So, this was a good opportunity to catch up with my family and friends. I had loads of fun with them.

What is keeping you busy in Mumbai these days?
I have started composing songs these days. See, a lot of music composers have their set team and some even sing themselves. So, to create an opportunity for yourself, I thought I should also compose songs.

Actors too nowadays lending their voices in their own films. What’s your take?
Yes, that seems to be a trend these days. For example Salman Khan is doing it quite frequently. And we have seen other actors following the trend as well. Shraddha Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra are also singing in films. But I feel that’s not good for the new crop of singers who are trying to establish themselves in the industry. Lending one’s own voice does’t add much value to a career of an actor. But it certainly means a lot for a talented singer who is trying to make a mark for himself/herself in the industry.

Too many singing reality shows are now aired on different channels these days which was not the case when you participated in a reality show. Is it good or bad?
See, it is both good and bad. Good in the sense that young talented singers get a platform to showcase their talent. Bad because the shelf life of these reality shows singers is becoming less. Since so many singers are bursting on to the scene, they fade away that quickly as well. I believe the best singer who has the ‘X’ Factor can only survive these days.

One of your close friends and Lucknowite, singer Amit Mishra, has made it big in Bollywood with the song ‘Bulleya’. What do you have to say about your friend Amit?
Well, Amit is a dear friend of mine. When he came to Mumbai, he stayed with me for quite some time. I’m really happy for him that he’s made a name for himself in the music industry now. I always knew he will do well as he has an extraordinary voice. I wish him all the luck for his future assignments.
