Under the “Swachata Hee Sewa” campaign, the Rajbhawan of Uttar Pradesh organized a series of events, emphasizing cleanliness and environmental conservation. These events aimed to promote awareness and action toward maintaining cleanliness, a key focus of the Swachh Bharat initiative. The highlight of the program was the grand finale, which featured a unique fashion show on environmental themes. Smt. Anandiben Patel, the Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh, asked renowned fashion designer Asma Hussain to organize this special show. What made it even more special was that the participants were children from a reform school and the Rajbhawan school for underprivileged kids, as well as children from ‘Ummeed,’ an NGO supporting kids from the beggar community aged 4 to 15 years.

Asma Hussain named the fashion show “Lullabies in the Forest,” which creatively narrated the story of Earth. The show opened by portraying Earth as a happy and healthy planet, flourishing with natural beauty and life. However, it gradually showed how industrialization, consumerism, and the impact of nuclear power and petrochemical waste turned these positive elements into monsters, representing environmental damage. The show skillfully communicated the harmful consequences of human activities on the environment through symbolic fashion pieces, bringing awareness to the pressing need for environmental protection.

In addition to the narrative of environmental degradation, Asma Hussain also showcased an elegant collection of party and wedding clothes made from khadi fabrics, underlining the importance of sustainable and eco-friendly fashion. Khadi, a handwoven fabric, is both traditional and environmentally responsible, and its inclusion in the fashion show reflected the alignment of cultural heritage with modern ecological concerns. This fusion highlighted the potential of eco-friendly materials in high-fashion clothing, making a powerful statement about the sustainability movement in the fashion industry.

One of the remarkable sequences in the show was designed by the students of the Asma Hussain Institute of Fashion Technology (AIFT). These students took on the challenge of creating garments from waste materials, showcasing their creativity and commitment to sustainability. Among these creations, Naila Ansari stood out with her design inspired by the Chernobyl nuclear plant disaster. Her dress symbolized how life has started to regrow despite the catastrophic release of radioactive materials, delivering a strong message of resilience and recovery in the face of environmental destruction.

The event was graced by several dignitaries, including the Guest of Honour, Alok Kumar, IAS, Principal Secretary of MSME, Textile, and Khadi, and S.M. Bobde, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor of UP. The students who contributed their innovative designs included Bushra Khursheed, Khushi Saxena, Sana Ghufran, Fauzia Naaz, Simran Kumari, Waliya Mansoori, and Naila Ansari. This unique fashion show beautifully blended art, fashion, and environmental activism, leaving a lasting impression on the audience while also empowering underprivileged children to be a part of a meaningful cause.
